Winning the National Highly Commended for Best Designer/Dressmaker

On the 16th of January 2019, Mr D and I packed ourselves off, down to the big smoke for an evening of glitz, glamour and anxious waiting!

It was the 2019 National Wedding Industry Awards finals and we, Elizabeth Malcolm Bridalwear, were up for the award of Best Designer after winning the regional event in November.

The Wedding Industry Awards are the biggest and most important event in the wedding industry calendar. Celebrating excellence thought the industry, and to have been a regional finalist 4 years in a row is an extremely huge honour. However, 2019 was our year to shine. This was the year that we got the regional title and to say that we were happy about this was a massive understatement.

How the Judging works

How the winners are decided upon is through a judging panel of specifically picked out industry professionals. They would use our customer’s votes and comments, images, website and our social media presence, to help them with there decisions.

After the Regional winners are announced, they all get put through to the finals where the best of the best compete for the top prize!

Winning the Award

We were absolutely astounded to have been awarded the National Highly commended. I could hardly believe it walking up onto the stage to get our little pink trophy! What an honour! What a Joy! What an unbelievable experience, one that I will never forget.

In an ever-changing industry, it is so rewarding to have achieved this accolade. It has always been a hard industry to work in as it is so competitive. With competition from the internet, big chain wedding dress shops and the deteriorating rate of the high street, it becomes even more important to stand out from the crowd and give the best you can give to your customers. By winning this award it is like a little stamp of approval from our past customers and peers!

One of the main reasons we also enter these awards is that we actually receive the comments and marks from our customers Which is just the icing on the cake!

Lovely Comments

“Elizabeth went above and beyond to make my outfit special. As someone who doesn’t like dresses, Liz agreed to make me a bridal jumpsuit for the occasion. From start to finish she was caring, attentive and made sure to always ask that what she was doing was how I had envisioned the outfit at every stage of development. I couldn’t be happier with the finished product nor how the whole process happened.” Chloe

“Lizzie as an absolute joy to work with from the moment I stepped into her store. She is responsive, she cares, and she knows what looks good on you! Couldn’t have been happier with my dress, it’s stunning. ” Lila

“Lizzie is just an absolute legend at what she does. I was incredibly anxious and undecided about my wedding dress but she has treated me with such understanding, care and friendliness the whole way through. I have been blown away by her attention to detail and her customer service. Not to mention the amazing value for money she provides. I’ve got an incredible dress and a ginger sister from another mister. Thanks so much! X ” Claire

Claire and Steve

Claire and Steve were married in a beautiful outside ceremony at Bradgate Park, surrounded by stunning woodland with their closest family and friends. Then went on to have a wonderful Tipi Reception, full of love, laughter, sparklers and dancing! Steve even had a little rock out with the band!!

We had such a wonderful time creating Claire’s vision. When we first meet she had an idea of a green wedding dress, her favourite colour, which we were so excited about! Daring to be different, we searched for the perfect shade and came across a beautiful Laurel Green silk dupion that we both fell in love with. Basing the gown on our stunning Wisteria design, we added the asymmetric shoulder strap, rouched waist sash, super long train and a pair of cheeky little pockets, to make it that extra special for Claire.

Gemma and Rob

“Lizzie did an amazing job with my dress, a beautiful creation of red silk with cream lace
flowers, also adding sparkles and my random crocheted feathers to accommodate my very
last minute request. She even went so far as to deliver it to the hotel when I was tied up
decorating the venue the evening before the wedding. Everyone thought the dress looked
amazing, and I received countless compliments on it. No off the shelf dress would ever have matched my dreams like hers did.”

Gemma and Rob were married at Kedleston Hall and had their reception on the parks grounds in Tipis! Gemma knew exactly what she wanted when she first came the boutique. “A red dress, to reflect my Chinese heritage.” So we set about finding the perfect red, and came across this stunning silk dupion. Hand appliquéd cream French lace adds such a beautiful effect to the dress and I just love the way the lace seems to organically creep up from the hem.

Jessica and Mark

“Elizabeth is friendly, confident and amazingly artistic. She made me feel instantly at ease and helped me design the perfect wedding dress for me. Elizabeth knew what my dress would look like even before I did and her creative skill is beautiful. I was fully part of the process and was able to change my dress design throughout. Her attention to detail and my needs made my dress into a unique masterpiece. Her initiative was phenomenal. I could not have asked for a better dress designer, I love my dress! Elizabeth had been recommended to me by a friend, she is very professional and her work speaks for itself.” Jessica Simpson (Brunt)

Jessica and Mark were married at Shottle Hall in Derbyshire. Jessica wore a bespoke version of our Charlotte design, a porcelain satin bodice and lot of luscious layers of tulle for the skirt. With a delicate French lace Jacket, little cap sleeves and a pretty flower decorated with hand stitched sparkly Swarovski crystals. To finish off this stunning gown we added a beautiful lace trim to the hem of the skirt, the perfect finishing touch.

Isabel and Dionn

“I wanted something unique and Lizzie took up the challenge. She was there for me every step of the way, even though I had painful surgeries during the time up to our wedding. Lizzie worked around my injuries and even modified my dress to accommodate the injury I was left with. She was professional but caring and genuine, and the attention to detail was astounding. She was the same lovely person no matter the challenges and reassured me every step of the way especially on the day. No one better.”

Isabel Ashford-Vergeldt (Ashford)

The stunning Isabel and the very lucky Dionn promenading at Chatsworth House.

I received an email from Isabel explaining that she was getting married and that she wanted something “a little different” to wear on her wedding day from the normal wedding dress looks she was used to seeing. When she came to the Belper Boutique for the first time we discussed all sorts of ideas, different colours, laces, a dress or a coat version and with it having a high neck. We decided upon a design which both Isabel and myself were very happy with.

A few months later I received an other email from Isabel explaining that she had had some surgery, that it had gone very well and that there was hardly any scaring, hence the high neck line. So, could she come back to the boutique and discuss some more thoughts she had with me.

On the second visit, Isabel could not contain her excitement at how well the surgery went and how we didn’t have to cover up, what we thought would be quite a big scar. So, back to the drawing board we went, and decided on an Edwardian inspired coat design, with an amazing hidden corset and the biggest train I have done to date. The fabric was the most luxurious Heavy Weight Crepe Back Satin in a stunningly warm “Cornsilk” shade, a perfect complement to Isabel’s skin tone.

The wedding day itself was 1920’s/ Great Gatsby theme, with all the Men wearing black tie and the ladies flapper dresses. The colours were exquisitely picked by Isabel, dark reds and delicate pinks with rose gold and sliver metallics, that bouquet was to die for! What fun was had, and I think I have made friends for life in Isabel and Dionn xXx

Charlotte and Thom

“After visiting a number of bridal shops, I met Lizzie at Calke Abbey and instantly knew that I wanted to have my wedding dress designed and made by her. Lizzie was so passionate and enthusiastic about creating my perfect dress; every little detail was accounted for. Her approach is calming and confident, which is needed when for many months you only have a vision of the dress! Lizzie was also on hand to help me on my wedding day, her commitment
doesn’t stop until you walk down the aisle. Lizzie took my idea and was able to design a dress that matched this perfectly. She uses lovely fabrics and is very welcoming at her lovely boutique.”

Charlotte Davidson (Dean)

Creating Charlotte’s Wedding Dress was a dream come true. Not only is she and her family some of the loveliest people I have ever met, but she was just so giddy with excitement all the way through the wedding preparations, it was infectious!

We first met each other at a Wedding Fayre at Calke Abbey, the location for her and Thom’s reception. Charlotte explained to me that she had an idea of what she wanted for her wedding dress, and that she had been to try some on but had managed to pick fault with them all so having it made for her was a perfect option.

Charlotte came to the Belper boutique to try on our designs and discuss what she wanted. It was there she met and fell in love with “Gracie Rose”, the feel of the Silk Habotai and the fullness of the skirt. The point detail on the bodice happened entirely by accident. We were just playing with the neckline and happened to come upon this amazing shape. When we added the French lace top the dress was perfect, not forgetting the stunning hand appliquéd French lace veil that was worn ALL DAY! xXx
